Almonds are super healthy for us. Numerous studies reveal eating almonds aids brain health, improves skin texture, controls blood sugar levels, and is even great for weight loss. But, a few experts suggest that eating raw almonds doesn’t allow us to enjoy its wide nutrient benefits.

Almonds are tough nuts. It contains compounds that hamper our bodies from absorbing the nut’s nutrients. This is when activated almonds could help you. Activated almonds are a result of soaking and dehydrating these nuts (we’ve included the recipe below, do check it out!).

Benefits Of Eating Activated Almonds

1. You Get A Higher Dose Of Healthy Enzymes

Most of us are familiar that eating sprouted versions of seeds and legumes are healthier. Activated almonds work the same way. Activated almonds contain more healthier enzymes than regular ones. Because during “activation”, almonds kick start a growth cycle that is otherwise inhibited. Once the germination process starts, it starts producing more enzymes.

2. Your Body Can Absorb Nutrients Better

Almond skin is made tough to protect the contents. It contains enzyme inhibitors that aims to protect the almond until it gets adequate levels of sunlight and water. Our body cannot breakdown these enzyme inhibitors, as a result you only get a limited amount of almond’s nutrients. But, during activation, germinated almonds builds compounds that obstruct these enzyme inhibitors, and you are able to absorb all the nutrients.

3. You Reduce The Level Of “Antinutrients”

Antinutrients are natural compounds that cause disruption in absorbing nutrients. It binds itself to vitamins and minerals, making it difficult for our bodies to receive the nutrients. It could also create issues in digestion. These are found in a lot of vegetables, seeds, and nuts. The antinutrients present in almonds are known as phytic acid or phytate. How do we eliminate these antinutrients? The process of soaking and dehydrating almonds helps to get rid of phytic acid.

4. You Have A Smoother Digestion

Activated almonds are a much healthier option to keep your digestive tract healthy. Since regular almonds contain antinutrients like phytic acid, it could create problems in digestion. Also, eating raw almonds makes it even more difficult for your body to absorb nutrients.

5. You Protect The Heart

Almonds contain a truckload of nutrients. One study found out regular consumption of almonds reduced LDL cholesterol levels and increased HDL cholesterol levels, this, in turn, reduced the risk of heart issues.1 Also, being super rich in vitamin E, you improve your immunity as well. But you gain these benefits with adequate nutrient absorption. With activated almonds, your body can absorb nutrients much efficiently unlike eating raw almonds.

Activated Almonds Recipe

  • Rinse almonds several times before tossing it in a bowl of water. Make sure the almonds are completely immersed in water.
  • Add kombucha, sauerkraut juice, or apple cider vinegar (with the mother) into the bowl. Next, add a pinch of salt. Let it soak for 24 hours.
  • After soaking, you need to dry them out using a dehydrator on low heat or in an oven with its lowest setting. It should take about 5-6 hours.
  • Once it’s done, your almonds are dry, crispy, and ready.
If you are including almonds in your diet, choose activated almonds. We know it’s time consuming, but they are worth the extra effort for your health!
